Jason Lawrence

D.O.B.: April 8, 1987

Residence: Murrieta, Calif.

Weight: 140 lbs.

Turned Pro: 2005

National Number: #1 as defending WSX Lites champion, #338 outdoors

2008: WSX Lites champion. Three wins and three additional podiums (six podiums overall). Podium finishes at the first two outdoor nationals, including an impressive moto win at Glen Helen – the first of his career.

2007: 2nd overall WSX Lites. Six podium finishes in WSX Lites racing action. Scored two podium finishes outdoors, including his first-ever podium at Budds Creek, Md. Also podiumed at Unadilla, N.Y.

2006: Scored his first supercross podium finish ever at a WSX Lites race in Seattle. Made three top ten overall finishes outdoors.

2005: Debuted racing outdoors and made three top ten finishes, the best being an 8th place finish at Unadilla, N.Y.

For those of you that follow motocross on the Internet you’re no doubt well aware of Boost Mobile/ampm/Monster Energy/Troy Racing’s Jason Lawrence. There’s not much that can be said about the 2008 WSX Lites champion that hasn’t already been told in editorial commentary and/or posted in chat rooms from here to Europe. Wherever he goes Lawrence draw attention, most of the time good, sometimes not-so-good. But either way he enjoys one of the largest and most loyal fan bases in the word of motocross racing.

Maybe one of the best analogy’s of Lawrence was the likening him to the character “Kelly Leak” in the  film from your dad’s era (circa ’76) called “The Bad News Bears.” Leak was a foul-mouthed, cigarette-smoking, dirt bike-riding rowdy who just so happened to play a mean game of baseball. Lawrence’s persona is somewhat of a modern day parallel (sans the smoking and baseball) of Leak. Growing up as a teenager in full view of the public eye where everything’s magnified and scrutinized to the nines, Lawrence’s competitive spirit was often mistaken for a short temper, his sophomoric antics - including much-publicized rental car antics and the occasional dust up – undermined the fact that this kid can really race a dirt bike.

A multi-time Loretta Lynn’s Amateur MX National champion, Lawrence turned pro during an era of top shelf amateurs the moved onto the pro ranks, including: Ryan Villopoto, Davi Millsaps, Josh Grant and Mike Alessi. In fact, Lawrence’s battles at Loretta’s with the multi-time AMA Outdoor MX National champion Villopoto in 2005 were the stuff of legend at the famed event held every August in Tennessee.

Peel away a few of the ‘core’ outer layers of Jason Lawrence and many people would be surprised to find a quite intelligent, quick-witted young man who’s fun to be around outside the professional dirt bike racing circles. With enough drive and determination to become a champion in the rough and tumble world of dirt bike racing, once Lawrence burns through this phase of tic-tac penalties and suspensions brought on by his ‘wrong place at the wrong time’ behavior, the guy’s got a lot of years racing in front of him and no doubt more wins along the way.

Nick Wey

D.O.B.: June 18, 1980

Birthplace: Lansing, Mich.

Residence: Murrieta, Calif.

Height: 5’-10”

Weight: 175 lbs.

Turned Pro: 1997

National Number: #27 for both supercross and outdoors

Career Highlights

2008: Wey racked up eight top-ten finishes contesting the premier SX class in Monster Energy Supercross, then scored top-five finishes at RedBud (Buchanan, Mich.) and Spring Creek (Millville, Minn.) during the outdoor season. He finished 9th overall in supercross and 6th overall outdoors.

2007: Scored a supercross podium finish early in the season at Anaheim, Calif., but was injured and didn’t complete a full season of racing. Working through that injury and still racing, his best finish outdoors was a 13th at Budds Creek, Md.

2006: In SX class competition Wey scored supercross podium finishes at San Francisco, Orlando, Fla., and Irving, Texas. Staying on the gas during the outdoor season, Wey recorded three top-five overall finishes. At season’s end in supercross he was 5th overall in the SX class standings and 8th overall outdoors.

2005: A limited season due to a knee injury, Wey still put up solid numbers in supercross, placing in the top seven or better in each of the races he entered. His best result outdoors was a top five at Millville, Minn., which helped him secure a top ten overall finish (9th) on the season.

2004: This season marked Wey’s best overall results as a pro, placing 5th overall in supercross and 7th overall outdoors. Consistent top-ten performances for Wey were highlighted by a season-best 4th at the San Francisco Supercross and a 6th at one of his favorite outdoor tracks, Millville.

2003: Wey scored top-four finishes at both the Dallas and Salt Lake City Supercross races, ending up with a career-best 4th overall in the premier SX class standings. Outdoors Wey was just a click out of the top ten, placing 11th overall – his best finish being, again, at Millville, Minn.

2002: Wey’s freshman year in the premier SX class (first full season) was solid, placing 12th overall with a season-best 7th place finish at the Anaheim, Calif., opener. Outdoors was even better for Wey as he placed 8th overall with top-ten finishes at RedBud (Buchanan, Mich.), Washougal (Wash.) and Steel City (Delmont, Pa.).

2001: Wey placed 4th in the ESX championship, scoring podium finishes at Atlanta, Minneapolis and his home track in Pontiac, Mich. (Silverdome). He also raced some limited SX class rounds with a season-best 7th place finish coming at the third Anaheim, Calif., round. Outdoors Wey would place 12th overall in the 125cc class – his best result being a 6th at Millville, Minn.

2000: Scoring 125cc class podium finishes at Atlanta, Daytona Beach, Fla., and at his hometown track in Pontiac, Mich. (Silverdome), Wey placed 4th overall in the ESX. Outdoors he continued to excel, scoring a podium finish at High Point (Mt. Morris, Pa.) and placed 6th overall in the 125cc class.

1999: Wey’s most dominant year in the support 125cc class, Wey was on the podium at his hometown track in Pontiac, Mich. (Silverdome) and at the New Orleans Supercross. The year also marked Wey’s lone win as a pro, taking the 125cc victory at Millville, Minn. Overall Wey was 2nd in the 125cc ESX supercross points chase and 4th overall in 125cc class action outdoors.

1998: With a season-best 4th place finish at the St. Louis Supercross, Wey would place in the top 15 in his first full year as a pro racer. Outdoors Wey did even better, racking up seven top-ten finishes – including a season-best 5th at Southwick, Mass. For his efforts Wey was awarded the AMA’s Rookie of the Year trophy.

1997: Wey’s debut year as a pro, he finished 32nd outdoors with limited racing action.

Michigan’s Nick Wey is considered by many to be one of the most stylish and consistently fast racers on both the supercross and outdoor tours. A veteran with a highly strong work ethic, Wey brings with him to the Boost Mobile/ampm/Monster Energy/Troy Racing team a loyal group of fans that have been backing him since he first broke into the pro motocross racing ranks more than a decade ago, following a very successful amateur racing career that featured numerous national MX titles won at Loretta Lynn’s.

Starting out with the Pro Circuit/Kawasaki team in the late 1990s, Wey quickly established himself as a force in the then 125cc class racing. After winning the AMA’s Rookie of the Year in 1998 with a top-15 overall finish in supercross and top-ten overall finish outdoors, Wey’s sophomore season was spectacular – 2nd overall in ESX 125cc competition and 4th overall in 125cc class racing outdoors. 1999 also marked the lone win for Wey, taking top honors in 125cc class racing at Millville, Minn., that summer.

The next two years Wey would contest for the ESX podium often, placing 4th overall in both 2000 and ’01. This also marked a transition time where Wey was racing limited 250/SX class races on the west coast. 2002 would be Wey’s first full season on the big bikes and he put up some solid number, placing 8th in supercross and 12th outdoors.

Since moving up to the SX class full time Wey has consistently been a top-ten placer and, when healthy, a top-five overall placer in supercross. Outdoors he’s stayed in the top ten the majority of time as well, his best results coming at Millville and his hometown track of RedBud (Buchanan, Mich.).
