FSA & HSA Guide

Using Your FSA/HSA on Prescription Sunglasses

Prescription sunglasses are considered a qualified medical expense under most FSA and HSA plans. That means you may be able to use pre-tax dollars from your benefits account to cover part or all of the cost of a new pair of SPY prescription sunglasses.

Don't let your funds expire. Most FSA plans operate on a "use it or lose it" basis — unspent funds typically don't roll over. Prescription sunglasses are a smart way to put those dollars to work before your plan year ends. Check with your plan administrator for your specific deadline and any grace period that may apply.

What Typically Qualifies

The IRS generally considers prescription eyewear a qualified medical expense. However, eligibility depends on your specific plan. Always confirm with your FSA/HSA administrator before purchasing.

Getting Reimbursed in 4 Steps

SPY Optic does not process FSA/HSA payments directly. You place your order, then submit for reimbursement through your benefits provider.

Choose your frames & lenses

Browse the SPY prescription sunglasses collection and build your custom pair with the frame and lens combination you want.

Place your order on spyoptic.com

Check out using any accepted payment method. Upload or send your valid prescription during the checkout process.

Save your itemized receipt

Keep your order confirmation email and receipt. These will show the prescription lens and frame details your plan administrator needs to process your claim.

Submit a claim with your FSA/HSA provider

File a reimbursement claim through your benefits administrator's portal or app. Attach your receipt and prescription as supporting documentation.

Tips for a Smooth Claim

Check your balance first.

Log in to your FSA/HSA portal or call your plan administrator to confirm your available balance and plan year deadline.

Have a current prescription.

You'll need a valid, unexpired prescription from a licensed eye care provider. Most plans require it to be current within one to two years.

Keep all documentation.

Your plan may request an itemized receipt, order confirmation, and a copy of your prescription during the claims process. Save everything.

Contact your administrator — not us.

SPY Optic cannot advise on your specific plan's rules, covered expenses, or claim procedures. Your FSA/HSA administrator is the authority on your benefits.
